The SUV driver who plowed into a street festival in Vancouver, Canada, has now been criminally charged.

The suspect, a 30-year-old male, was earlier reported to have health issues.

In a report by Mariz Umali of GMA 7's 'Unang Balita,' he is now facing 8 counts of second-degree murder.

Vancouver Police confirmed that 11 people died from the tragic incident, with dozens more injured.

Authorities also added that legal charges could still possibly go up against the suspect.

According to reports, those who witnessed the bloody incident are still experiencing panic attacks.

The Lapu-Lapu Day celebration in Vancouver, Canada, is an annual cultural festival organized by the Filipino community to honor Datu Lapu-Lapu, a revered Filipino hero known for his resistance against Spanish colonization during the Battle of Mactan in 1521.

Recognized officially in British Columbia since 2023, the event features traditional Filipino music, dance, food, and community activities, drawing attendees from across Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

In 2025, the festival was held on April 26 along Fraser Street in South Vancouver, attracting nearly 100,000 people. Tragically, the celebration was marred by a devastating incident when a vehicle drove into the crowd, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.

Despite this tragedy, the Lapu-Lapu Day celebration remains a significant event, reflecting the resilience and unity of the Filipino-Canadian community.​
