Three children were rescued after being locked inside their home in Oviedo, located in northern Spain.

Reports said the children had been confined inside the house since December 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Authorities shared that while the children were not malnourished, they were unclean, and the condition of the house was in a very poor state.

According to El Comercio, the children's parents are a 53-year-old German man and his wife, and his 48-year-old American wife, who also with a German passport.

Both were put in provisional detention on Wednesday. They were charged with domestic violence with habitual psychological abuse and abandonment of minors, with no recommended bail.

"When we took them out of the house, into the garden, where they wouldn’t even go outside, they saw a snail and went crazy, freaked out," authorities said.
