Witness accounts described the suspect moving between floors while carrying knives in both hands. People inside the complex eventually intervened and restrained him before turning him over to responding officers.

Among those who helped was Nah Hyun-joon, who told OBS television that he and several others used chairs to stop the attacker, according to the Associated Press.

Nah also described people blocking the man near an escalator before the group managed to subdue him and remove his knives. His account provided further details about how those inside the mall helped bring the attack to an end.

The suspect was wearing an electronic ankle monitor linked to a previous conviction. Yonhap reported that he had completed a four-year prison term in 2019 for attempting to murder his former wife. His monitoring order was due to remain in place until February 2029.

Following the incident, South Korea’s Justice Ministry apologized and announced a review of its electronic monitoring and supervision system.
