The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has issued an official statement reaffirming its commitment to truth, accountability, and justice following the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

In its statement, the league expressed its condolences to the families, teammates, coaches, friends, and the entire Ateneo community as it continues to mourn the loss of the two young athletes.

“As the UAAP continues to mourn the untimely passing of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili on June 8, 2026 in Dipaculao, Aurora, the League continues to extend its heartfelt condolences to their families, loved ones, teammates, coaches, and the entire Ateneo community,” the UAAP said.

The organization stressed that it remains in solidarity with everyone affected by the tragedy while honoring the memory of the two student-athletes whose lives were cut short.

The UAAP also reiterated that it will take into account the findings of ongoing investigations being conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Ateneo de Manila University.

According to the league, only limited details surrounding the incident have been officially confirmed at this stage, making it important to allow authorities and investigators to complete their work.

While waiting for the results, the UAAP said it is closely monitoring developments and carefully reviewing information as it becomes available.

The league explained that once all investigations have been completed, the relevant findings will be referred to its Rules and Disciplinary Committee, which is composed of representatives from the seven other UAAP member schools, for a comprehensive and impartial review.

The UAAP emphasized that the safety, well-being, and holistic development of student-athletes remain among its highest priorities.

“The safety, well-being, and holistic development of student-athletes are at the heart of the UAAP’s inherent mission,” the statement read.

The organization also outlined several commitments moving forward. These include enforcing sanctions if investigations determine that there were violations of existing rules, protocols, laws, or regulations. However, the league stressed that any disciplinary action will be implemented only through due process and in accordance with established governance procedures.

In addition, the UAAP said it will review its current policies and regulations and make revisions if necessary to strengthen accountability measures and improve athlete protection.

The league also pledged to expand access to mental health resources, support services, and other protective measures for student-athletes, coaches, and staff members. It further committed to sustaining programs that promote teamwork, camaraderie, and overall well-being within the collegiate sports community.

“This difficult moment has reminded us that the care and protection of our student athletes are paramount,” the organization said.

Previously, the parents of Ateneo student-athlete Divine Adili are calling for answers and accountability following his death during a team-building activity in Aurora, saying they continue to struggle with unanswered questions about what happened. Their appeal has added to growing calls for transparency and a full accounting of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
