Jimmy Mariano, former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player, champion coach, and Olympian, has passed away at the age of 84. The PBA confirmed Mariano’s passing on Sunday, December 7, sharing a heartfelt message on its official social media channels.

“Our prayers and condolences to the family and loved ones of former PBA player and Presto champion coach, Mr. Jimmy Mariano. Requiescat in pace, sir,” the league wrote.
Mariano was widely recognized as a highly accurate left-handed shooter and one of the early big men in Philippine basketball capable of scoring from long range. He notably served as the flag bearer for the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Munich Olympics—the last time the national squad competed in the Summer Games. His skill, versatility, and leadership on the court left a lasting impact on Philippine basketball.
