Before the fight, pundits heavily favored defending Olympic champion and 2019 world champion Zoirov, while viewing Paalam as a huge underdog in their fight.

Despite the prevailing view about him, Paalam did not allow himself to be intimidated by the 2016 Olympic gold medalist and 2019 world champion Zoirov.

From the outset, Paalam showed aggressiveness, which helped him win the first round.

In round two, the 23-year-old Pinoy boxer kept on raining punches on the Uzbek without let up.

This went on until around 1:40 or 1:44, the two figured in an accidental head clash, resulting in both fighters sustaining cuts, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Paalam’s face was filled with great joy as his name was announced as the winner, while the Uzbek showed great disappointment that culminated in him walking out of the ring without extending a congratulatory greeting to the Pinoy boxer.

The win of the young Pinoy boxer brought the medal tally of the Philippines to four, the highest haul since the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics where the country earned three medals.
