“Si Duterte, ang berdugo ng Davao, ay pormal nang nai-turnover sa custody ng ICC sa The Hague, Netherlands. Sana po ay maging leksyon ito, sa kung sino mang maghahangad maging leader ng ating bansa, na dapat gamitin ang poder para lamang sa ikabubuti at ikauunlad ng mamamayan,” he wrote.

Duterte’s arrest follows an ICC investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity. During his presidency (2016-2022), thousands of suspected drug offenders were allegedly killed in police operations and vigilante-style executions. Human rights groups and international bodies condemned the campaign, citing widespread extrajudicial killings. The ICC launched a probe into the killings, and despite the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019, the court ruled that it still had jurisdiction over crimes committed while the country was a member.

Trillanes, a longtime critic of Duterte, recalled that in 2017, his group Magdalo filed the case at the ICC against the then-president. He also expressed gratitude on Twitter to those who had fought for justice for the victims.

Sen. Bong Go, naka-video call si dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte

“Nung 2017, nagfile ng kaso ang Magdalo sa ICC laban kay duterte. After 8 years, sa WAKAS, nahuli na rin ang berdugo.
“Sa lahat ng nakasama namin sa mahabang lakbay na ito para sa hustisya ng mga libu-libong EJK victims, maraming salamat po!” he tweeted.

Duterte’s arrest has sparked intense reactions from both his supporters and critics, marking a major development in the ongoing accountability efforts for human rights violations committed during his presidency.

Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He left Malacañang on June 30. The newly inaugurated President of the Philippines is Bongbong Marcos who got 31 million votes in the May 2022 elections. The new Vice President of the Philippines is VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president.

Earlier, the former president was apprised of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine. In a video shared by GMA News, CIDG chief, Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, is seen reciting the Miranda Doctrine to the former president. The reading of the Miranda rights is a standard procedure for persons being arrested to ensure that the latter fully understands their rights upon their arrest. It can be recalled that the International Police (InterPol) has confirmed the issuance of the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the former president.
