“Happy Father’s Day, Papa/Dada Rody. As much as we talk, the kind of man you are never lets me run out of things to say.”
Kitty then described the frequency of their communication and the emotional presence she feels from her father despite distance.
“I talk to you 4 times a week, I see you every other month, but I feel you in every wave of silence and every strike of the crowd.”
Moving deeper into her reflection, Kitty shifted her focus toward her father’s legacy, noting how she has been thinking about the meaning behind his public service.
“Beyond all these impressive, but superficial titles, legacies, credentials and achievements, I’ve been pondering about what among the things you’ve imparted to us, holds most merit.”
She continued by emphasizing what she believes to be the most important lesson she received from him—his upbringing and the values shaped within their family.
“And then it dawned on me— the whole time it was upbringing, the mere thing that makes us special. I know for certain we may not be as wealthy, as decent, as polished as the others, but what cannot be denied is the dominance of your character, that I can honestly attest, we all took after.”
Kitty also reflected on her father’s approach to public service, contrasting it with how she perceives political life in general, while praising his dedication to serving others.
“Papa rody, out of all these proud public servants, who cry righteousness in their suits and treat politics as a stage, you always knew it was meant for service. Nanay soling may have said you would end up as a “kargador” but I know deep down she always knew you were an exception. You always had a way with people. You indeed unreluctantly carried them, without a hint of what it would weigh—like I always say, at the expense of everything and everyone you have.”
She then addressed the complex public perception surrounding her father’s identity and leadership, expressing pride in how she sees him beyond formal titles.
“I deemed it normal to have felt this sense of territoriality when people called you tatay, but it would be an insult to the gravity of your sacrifices to just call you “president”. Papa rody, you are the best papa—but an even better patriot, Tatay Digong.”
