Police said the victim lost a cellphone worth more than P40,000. The device's owner had reportedly been sleeping inside the van while waiting for his wife.
"Habang inaantay niya 'yung asawa niya, natulog muna siya doon sa loob. Ngayon, napansin niya na may kumuha dun sa cellphone niya. Kasi nung natulog siya, naka-open kasi yung bintana," police said in the report.
Authorities added that the victim attempted to chase the suspect after discovering that his cellphone had been stolen, but he was unable to catch him.
The breakthrough came after investigators tracked the device through its GPS feature. Police discovered that the cellphone's location was pointing to Taytay, Rizal.
During a follow-up operation, officers arrested the 37-year-old suspect, who was later identified as a motorcycle taxi rider. The stolen cellphone and the motorcycle he allegedly used during the incident were recovered.
"Nung nalaman ng biktima, still yung GPS nung cellphone is naka-on pa and pumipitik dun sa Taytay. Immediately pumunta kami doon sa Taytay and nahuli namin yung suspect," an investigator said.
The victim later identified the suspect as the same person seen taking the cellphone.
The suspect admitted his involvement in the theft during an interview.
"Ginawa ko po. Ako po yung nagnakaw. Natukso lang po ako sir. Hindi ko naman po talaga gawain yung ganun," he said.
When asked what he intended to do with the cellphone, he replied, "Gagamitin ko po sana sa trabaho."
According to police records, the suspect had previously been jailed for a case involving violation of the Violence Against Women and Their Children Act. He now faces complaints for theft and violation of the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act.
