According to a report aired on Unang Balita Thursday, the suspect allegedly targeted a vendor at a convenience store before fleeing and hiding under the bridge.
Community watchmen and police officers later used an improvised boat to reach the man and carry out the arrest, which drew onlookers and briefly slowed traffic in the area.
Police said a commuter waiting for a jeepney witnessed the incident and tried to pursue the suspect before seeking help from authorities.

“‘Yung victim natin dito, naka-charge ‘yung kaniyang cellphone. So vendor siya. ‘Yun na nga, hinuhugot niya, pinapasimplehan niya na kinukuha ang cellphone ng isang vendor natin,” said Police Colonel Renante Pinuela, chief of the Navotas Police.
He also commended the witness for calling police attention instead of continuing the chase.
“Tama lang ang ginawa ng witness natin na [tinawag] 'yung atensyon ng kapulisan natin kasi hindi rin natin alam baka may panaksak o may baril itong ating suspek. Wala kaming nakikita na may grupo siya,” Pinuela added.
Authorities recovered the stolen cellphone, valued at ₱10,000, from the suspect.
Records showed he had only been released from jail in January due to a gamb*ling-related offense before being implicated in the latest case.
The man admitted to the theft during questioning.
“Para lang sa bisyo po. Sakto-sakto din po, gutom na-gutom na din ako. Pambili rin ng pagkain,” he said.
He is now detained at the local police station and faces a formal theft complaint as the investigation continues.
In a separate development, a troubling viral video showed a Filipina being assaulted by a foreign national inside a shopping mall in Singapore, sparking widespread alarm. The Department of Migrant Workers confirmed that its labor attaché has already contacted the victim and is providing support. “Medical assistance is the most basic there, and of course, filing of the complaint, our lawyer would stand ready to help her,” said Hans Cacdac. Authorities are handling the case as physical assault and are coordinating with Singaporean officials to ensure the victim receives appropriate medical care, legal assistance, and due process as the investigation proceeds.
Meanwhile, a family in Barangay Mayamot, Antipolo, was left shaken after CCTV footage captured a man rummaging through their bedroom while they were asleep on February 8, 2026. Homeowner Mary Rose Bustamante reported that mobile phones, wallets, and more than ₱20,000 in cash were stolen. Some of the missing bags were later recovered in a nearby alley, but the cash remained unrecovered. Police identified the suspect as a local resident previously linked to burglary and carnapping cases, prompting authorities to intensify their manhunt to prevent further incidents and protect the community.
