Argument over cockfighting allegedly leads to double tragedy in Bukidnon

A peaceful afternoon in Barangay Kiraon, Damulog, Bukidnon, turned into a horrific scene after a family dispute ended in a double tragedy. A 65-year-old father is now behind bars after he allegedly stabbed his 54-year-old wife and their 34-year-old son to death following a heated argument.

According to the police investigation, the trouble began while the suspect was drinking alcohol. He was confronted by his son, and the two began to argue over something seemingly minor: a cockfight. The son reportedly got angry because his father had pitted a young chicken against much larger ones. However, as the argument continued, it escalated to other personal issues between the two.

The confrontation followed them home, where things quickly turned physical. During the scuffle, the suspect reportedly reached for a hunting knife. Major Joann Navarro, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10), explained the turn of events: “Then kamulo sa pagkulata sa iyang amahan kining amahan sa pagdepensa sa iyang kaugalingon mikuha kini og hunting knife nga naa usab sa table sa sulod sa panimalay ug didto iyang nadunggaban ang iyang anak sa kuto-kuto nga bahin sa tiyan.”

The suspect’s wife witnessed the violent attack on her son and rushed in to stop the fighting. Sadly, in the chaos, she was also stabbed in the chest. While the son was rushed to the hospital, he passed away a few hours later. The mother, unfortunately, did not reach the hospital alive.

The suspect was later turned over to the barangay, where he reportedly admitted to the crime. He is now set to face parricide charges. Major Navarro reminded the public about the dangers of heavy drinking, noting how it affects one's judgment. “Pag naa naman gud kita sa espirito sa ilimnong makahubog aduna gyud mga butang, mga desisyon o mga actions nga mahimo nga dili gyud something nga gustohon nato voluntary wala kita sa sakto nga panghuna-huna. So dako nga butang nga ang pag-inom atong likayan,” she added.

This heartbreaking incident in Bukidnon highlights the volatile nature of domestic disputes, especially when fueled by alcohol. Bukidnon, a province known for its vast agricultural lands and peaceful communities, has been left shocked by the sudden violence within the household. The suspect now remains in police custody while the community mourns the loss of two family members.
