But for one family in Valenzuela City, that nightmare transformed into a horror story of unspeakable cruelty that has left their community shaken.

Rodlee Rivera-Zulueta and her family are currently reeling from shock after their beloved pet, which had briefly escaped from their compound, was discovered in a gruesome state.

The dog, which the family describes as a gentle soul with no history of biting or aggression, was found weak, covered in blood, and suffering from a catastrophic injury: its tongue had been deliberately cut off.

The incident began on a Tuesday when the dog, usually tethered safely inside their property, managed to break loose.

The family launched an immediate search, scouring the neighborhood for hours. When they finally located their pet, the relief of finding him was instantly replaced by horror.

Not far from where the dog lay trembling, the family found the severed piece of his tongue on the ground—a grim testament to the violence inflicted upon him.

Chilling details have since emerged from the night of the attack. A piece of video footage recorded near the scene around midnight captured the heartbreaking sounds of the dog howling and crying, likely at the very moment the injury was inflicted. In the same clip, the headlight of a motorcycle can be seen cutting through the darkness, providing a potential clue regarding the perpetrator's identity.

The injured animal was immediately rushed to a veterinary clinic. Aside from the trauma of the mutilation, the dog tested positive for other underlying illnesses and is currently battling a severe infection.

Veterinarians have confirmed that the tongue cannot be surgically restored. However, in a display of remarkable resilience, the dog is currently in the recovery stage.

The vet noted that the animal is already attempting to adapt to its "new normal," trying to drink water by using its snout since it can no longer lap up liquid.

While it is possible for the dog to survive and adjust to this disability, he will require lifelong assisted care and close monitoring from his owners.

The Rivera-Zulueta family remains baffled as to why anyone would target their pet. "He is kind. He doesn't bite," they reiterated, struggling to understand the motive behind such a barbaric act.
