Another councilor, Abdulmanap Biang, was also inside the vehicle but escaped unharmed.
Police said the assailants were riding a motorcycle without a license plate. Lt. Col. Jopy Ventura, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, said investigators believe the attackers were waiting for the group at the location where the shooting occurred.
"Sa initial investigation, sila ay inabangan ng alleged riding-in-tandem," says Ventura.
He added that the suspects opened fire as soon as the victims reached the area.
Authorities are now looking into several possible motives, with personal conflict emerging as one of the main angles.
"Isa sa tinitingnang angulo is yung personal na away," says Ventura.
The remains of the deceased farmer were later retrieved by the Vice Mayor of Sultan sa Barongis, while the wounded councilor continues to recover.
Police are pursuing leads as they work to identify the perpetrators and establish the circumstances behind the ambush, which has caused renewed concern among residents regarding safety and political tension in the area.
In other developments, a 74-year-old man from Davao City died after being stabbed by his own grandson. Family members revealed that the suspect had shown threatening behavior toward the victim in the past. They also disclosed that the 27-year-old had been admitted to a mental health facility multiple times before the tragic incident. The relatives have chosen not to file criminal charges and instead plan to have him placed under psychiatric care. News of the elderly man’s death left neighbors and residents in the community shaken.
In a separate case, an 18-year-old student took her own life after unauthorized CCTV footage—allegedly showing her taking ice cream without paying—circulated among local youths.
