The victims, consisting of a tricycle driver and three of his passengers, were violently struck by a delivery van that allegedly experienced brake failure while traversing a descending portion of the road.
The tragic incident occurred on the Quirino Highway in Barangay Cecilia, Tagkawayan, Quezon. According to an investigation by local authorities, the delivery van was traveling downhill when the driver reportedly lost control.
The heavy vehicle veered into the opposite lane, directly into the path of the oncoming tricycle.
The impact was immediate and devastating. The smaller tricycle was crushed and dragged underneath the massive van, illustrating the sheer force of the collision.
The tricycle driver and three of his passengers were killed instantly at the scene. Another passenger from the tricycle was critically injured and rushed to a local hospital, where their condition remains severe.
The driver of the delivery van, who was immediately taken into custody by the police, claimed that mechanical failure was to blame for the carnage.
He asserted that the van, which was heavily loaded at the time, suddenly lost its brakes while descending the slope of the highway.
He was unable to control the steering, resulting in the fatal crossing into the lane occupied by the victims.
While police are treating the driver’s claim with caution, the allegation of faulty vehicle maintenance often surfaces in deadly road accidents involving commercial vehicles.
The investigation is expected to focus heavily on verifying the van’s mechanical status, load capacity compliance, and the driver's operational adherence to safety regulations.
Should the brake failure be confirmed, the owner and operator of the vehicle could face serious accountability issues beyond the driver's own liability.
The company that owns the delivery van has not yet issued a statement regarding the crash or the condition of their vehicle.
Meanwhile, local police are working to notify and secure statements from the devastated families of the four deceased and the critically injured passenger.
This harrowing incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of commuters on smaller public transport, like tricycles, against heavy commercial vehicles, and underscores the urgent need for stringent regulation and enforcement of maintenance checks on large vehicles traveling major provincial arteries like the Quirino Highway.
