Man killed in gunfight after firing at police; wife says he was battling depression

Gunfire erupted along a street in Barangay Muzon South, San Jose del Monte, after a man who had been reported for firing his gun allegedly engaged authorities in a shootout.

The suspect, whose wife had recently given birth, died following the encounter.
According to a report by Sandra Aguinaldo on GMA News’ “24 Oras” on Wednesday, police responded to a call about a man firing shots in the area.
Upon their arrival, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the responding officers.

A personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), who had joined in assisting the police operation, sustained injuries during the exchange.
The suspect was later hit by bullets and was declared dead at the hospital.
In a follow-up report by Raffy Tima, the suspect’s wife, who had just given birth last month, rushed to the scene in shock.
She said she had no idea what triggered her husband’s violent behavior, adding that he appeared fine the last time they spoke.
However, she disclosed that they had recently been evicted from their rented home because they could no longer afford the rent.
Some residents shared that the suspect had confided in someone that he had been experiencing depression prior to the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine the full circumstances behind the shooting and what led the suspect to open fire.

The victim was only running an errand for his mother when the incident occurred. Two young cousins drowned while swimming in the river on the border of Pagbilao and Lucena City. Authorities recovered the bodies of the victims in different sections of the river.
