Tanker truck explodes in Atimonan, killing driver and injuring five, including students

A tragic accident in Atimonan, Quezon, left one person dead and five others injured after a tanker truck lost its brakes and rammed into several vehicles before exploding along Maharlika Highway early Monday morning.

According to a report by JP Soriano on "GMA News’ 24 Oras," the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. in Barangay Malinaw.

Police said the tanker was descending a slope when it lost its brakes and slammed into a stationary trailer truck that had earlier figured in another mishap.

The impact caused the tanker to overturn, slide down the road, and hit two tricycles ahead of it.

The tanker driver died instantly, while three students and two tricycle drivers suffered third-degree burns.

The resulting explosion ignited nearby structures, including a house, a sari-sari store, several trees, electrical cables, and a motorcycle.

Residents described the scene as terrifying as flames engulfed the area.

The injured victims were rushed to a hospital in Atimonan, but the students were later transferred to the East Medical Center in Quezon City due to the severity of their burns.

One victim’s father has appealed for assistance from the tanker’s owner. Authorities revealed that this was the third incident of brake failure in the same area within three months and urged motorists to slow down and exercise caution when driving downhill.

Police said she had previously been jailed for a similar case but went into hiding after posting bail. Authorities urge other victims to file complaints to elevate the case to syndicated estafa.
