Senator Chiz Escudero expressed deep concern and solidarity with the residents affected by the strong earthquake that jolted Davao Oriental and nearby areas on Friday morning.

Posting a photo of praying hands, Escudero shared his sympathy for those impacted by the tremor, saying he felt the fear and uncertainty experienced by residents across the region.

“Sa gitna ng lindol na yumanig sa Davao Oriental at mga karatig-lugar ngayong umaga, ako’y lubos na nababahala at nakikiramay sa mga pamilyang apektado. Hindi biro ang lakas ng pagyanig at ang takot na dulot nito ay dama sa buong rehiyon. Kasama ninyo ako sa panalangin para sa kaligtasan ng bawat isa, lalo na sa mga nasa baybayin at mga lugar na may naitalang pinsala,” the senator wrote.

Escudero then called for immediate and coordinated action from concerned government agencies to ensure the safety and welfare of the affected residents.

“Nananawagan ako ng agarang pagkilos mula sa mga kinauukulang ahensya ng pamahalaan. Kailangang tiyakin ang kaligtasan ng mga lumikas, ang maayos na pagresponde sa mga nasaktan, at ang masusing pagsusuri sa mga imprastrukturang maaaring naapektuhan. Hindi dapat magtagal ang paglalatag ng tulong at pagtiyak sa kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan,” he added.

The senator also reiterated the importance of passing his proposed measure, Senate Bill No. 277, which seeks to strengthen the National Building Code of the Philippines to prevent large-scale damage and casualties in future disasters.

“Isinusulong din po natin ang mabilisang aksyon para sa Senate Bill No. 277 na aking inihain noong Hulyo. Layunin ng panukalang batas na ito na palakasin ang National Building Code of the Philippines sa pamamagitan ng obligadong pagsusuri sa katatagan ng mga gusali at mas mabigat na parusa sa mga lalabag sa mga regulasyon sa konstruksyon at mga pamantayan sa kaligtasan,” Escudero explained.

Finally, he reminded the public and government agencies alike not to be complacent, stressing that every earthquake serves as a warning to strengthen preparedness and resilience.

“Hindi natin kailangang hintayin ang ‘The Big One’ para kumilos. Ang bawat pagyanig ay paalala na ang ating mga gusali ay dapat hindi lamang nakatayo, kundi kayang tumindig sa gitna ng sakuna.”

As previously reported by KAMI, Sen. Chiz Escudero questioned why Martin Romualdez's name is absent from the flood control probe lists. He called Romualdez "the name that cannot be mentioned" despite stepping down as House Speaker. He raised the issue to the Independent Commission on Infrastructure.
