The incident, which devastated a neighborhood, was caused by the ignition of illegally stored firecracker materials inside a private home.
The explosion rocked the Batimana Compound on Paisa Street at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, quickly triggering a fire that engulfed the immediate area.
The powerful blast, attributed to the stored gunpowder and pyrotechnic components, claimed the lives of the young twin girls and wounded seven other people, including a senior citizen and three children.
One of the injured is a 13-year-old girl who sustained severe burns on her body and is currently being treated in a hospital. Furthermore, the disaster rendered four families homeless as their residences were destroyed by the resulting blaze.
Valenzuela City Mayor Wes Gatchalian immediately visited the site and announced that the local government unit (LGU) would shoulder the financial burden of the tragedy.
"The city government and emergency response teams are working closely to provide assistance to the affected families," Mayor Gatchalian stated, assuring the public that all hospital bills for the injured victims would be covered by the LGU.
The incident immediately raised questions regarding the legality of storing volatile chemicals in densely populated areas.
Valenzuela Police Chief Police Colonel Joseph Talento confirmed that storing pyrotechnic materials and chemicals for firecracker manufacturing in residential zones is strictly prohibited under current laws.
Authorities received information from residents and family members that kwitis (small rockets) were being stored, likely for sale, though physical evidence of the finished product was obliterated by the blast.
The incident underscores the inherent dangers of illegal home-based production and storage, which poses a severe risk to entire communities.
Local authorities are expected to intensify their enforcement efforts against illicit fireworks manufacturing, especially in residential areas, to prevent a recurrence of this heartbreaking and entirely avoidable tragedy.
