According to a report by James Paolo Yap on GMA Regional TV One Mindanao, the victim was ambushed by the group of high schoolers on his way home.

The assault left the boy with significant injuries, though he was initially able to return home. It wasn't until later that he began to suffer from a high fever and complained of a severe headache, prompting his family to rush him to a hospital in Iligan City.

Due to the seriousness of his condition and developing complications, he was subsequently transferred to a larger medical facility in Cagayan de Oro City.

Barangay officials have shed some light on the possible motive behind the assault. They revealed that the attack was reportedly in retaliation for the victim's earlier intervention in a fight between two other children.

The young boy, in a courageous act of trying to stop the altercation, became a target for the high school students involved.

This backstory has added a layer of tragic irony to the incident, as the victim was hurt for simply doing the right thing.
