Authorities in Lanao del Sur have increased security near the lone public tertiary school in Balabagan town after the Aug. 4 killing of a teacher.

In a radio interview on Monday, provincial police director Col. Caezar Cabuhat said he met with administrators, parents, and students of Balabagan Trade School to assure them that both plainclothes and uniformed personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence.
Teacher Danilo Barba Jr., a native of Trento, Agusan del Sur, was shot dead on the morning of Aug. 4 in front of the school in Barangay Narra by a lone gunman armed with a .45 caliber pistol. Barba died instantly.

Cabuhat reported that a Grade 11 student, identified as “Kaizer,” was arrested after witnesses — including the school principal and a tricycle driver — pointed him out as the attacker.

The suspect surrendered through his uncle, a police officer who assisted in locating him.
During the inquest, Cabuhat was stunned by the student’s admission.
“The suspect admitted that he shot his teacher because he gave him a failing grade,” Cabuhat told DXMS Radio, quoting what the student told the prosecutor.
Following the incident, some teachers had considered a mass resignation.
“However, when I talked to the town mayor, the principal, and the teachers, and told them the police and the Army would be deployed as peacekeepers, they changed their minds,” Cabuhat said.
Authorities have also implemented strict inspections at the school entrance for students, teachers, parents, and visitors to ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.

Still in other news, four individuals were injured in an explosion on Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Tondo, Manila. The blast was caused by a dismantled air-conditioning compressor that was being scavenged. One of the victims sustained a severed hand and another suffered a jaw injury, while two others had minor injuries. The Manila Police District's Explosive Ordnance Division and Scene of the Crime Operatives are investigating the incident and have ruled out a bomb as the cause.
