GMA Integrated News reporter Bernadette Reyes has taken to social media to pen a heartfelt open letter addressed to communications students dreaming of a career in media.

In her lengthy message, Reyes laid out the tough realities of the profession — from covering calamities and staying objective despite personal beliefs, to missing out on holidays and special happenings.
“Dear communications student, inaasahan kong nasa mabuti kang kalagayan sa kabila ng masamang lagay ng panahon,” she began her letter.
“Sumulat ako ngayong araw para ipag bigay alam sa iyo ang mga hamon sa landas na nais mong tahakin,” Reyes continued.

“Hindi madali ang trabahong nais mong pasukin. May mga pagkakataon na mapupunta ka sa giyera, sa baha, lindol at kung anu-ano pang sakuna. Mag co-cover ka ng mga isyung may sarili kang opinyon pero kailangan itong isantabi at maging "objective" sa iyong isusulat na balita. Aabutin ka ng antok, gutom pero ang pinakamahirap ay ang pangungulila.”
“Maaaring hindi ka makadalo sa birthday party ng pinakamatalik mong kaibigan, pati sarili mong birthday maaring sa trabaho mo ipagdiwang. Maaring sa halip na pamilya, mga kasamahan sa trabaho ang kasalo mo sa Noche Buena at pagsalubong sa Bagong Taon. At kung balang araw bubuo ka ng sarili mong pamilya, madalas pa sa minsan mo sila tatanggihan sa mga lakad pang pamilya pero kailangan mo itong ipaunawa.”
She was also frank about the financial realities of the job, noting that journalism may not lead to immediate wealth.
“Nais ko ring idagdag na hindi ito trabahong magpapayaman. Maaring sa mga unang taon, kulang pa sa sapat ang sahod pero kung may tiyaga ka, darating ang araw na sasapat din ang maiuuwi sa pamilya. Hindi labis-labis pero sapat para maibigay ang mga pangangailangan ng pamilya.”
On a more encouraging note, Reyes noted that determination is rewarded—especially for those who enter the field with a sense of purpose.
“Sa kabila nito, ito ang trabahong mag bibigay sayo ng pagkakataon na mapabuti ang lipunan, mabigyan ng kasagutan ang mga tanong na makatutulong sa kapwa, pagkakataon para mag lingkod sa pamamagitan ng paghahatid ng impormasyong napapanahon, tiyak at mapagkakatiwalaan.”
“Hindi madali ang landas na nais mong tahakin pero tinitiyak ko sayo na sa bawat araw, uuwi kang busog ang iyong puso at isipan ng mga kwento at aral ng buhay, uuwi kang masaya na nakapag lingkod sa bayan,” she further wrote, reaffirming the role of journalism in nation-building
