According to reports, the man had entered the underground hole in search of coins.

In a report by GMA Regional TV, also aired on Unang Balita on Wednesday, it was stated that rescuers were forced to remove the heavy metal cover of the manhole to free the man trapped inside.

After being pulled out, the man was immediately brought to the hospital for medical attention.

According to a witness, he heard banging sounds and a voice coming from the manhole.

“Nakarinig siya ng may pumupukpok sa bakal at narinig ang isang boses galing sa imburnal.”

Alarmed by the noise, the witness quickly alerted authorities.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office confirmed that the man had entered the drainage through another hole and crawled approximately 500 meters from where he was eventually found.

“Pumasok sa isang butas ang lalaki upang maghanap ng barya. May layo itong na nasa 500 metro kung saan siya nakita,” the office said.

Authorities are now coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Services in Cebu City to conduct an assessment of the man's situation and well-being.

The unusual and risky attempt to find coins in such a dangerous environment has raised concerns online, with many calling for increased support and aid for vulnerable individuals.

According to the report of Brigada News Philippines, the incident happened on June 23, Purok Ilaya, Brgy. Tuyan, Naga, Cebu. The suspect, Satur, is 29 years old, while the victim, Mae, is 24. Mae said that the suspect borrowed her cellphone, and she suspected that he used her e-wallet to play on Scatter, eventually leading to an argument and to the assault.
