Engr. Philipp Santiago II, a 45-year-old Filipino mountaineer, passed away during his quest to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.

According to a report by The Himalayan Times, Snowy Horizon Treks Managing Director Bodhraj Bhandari said Santiago died at Camp IV while preparing for the summit push on the evening of May 14. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Bhandari also told the outlet that other members of the team are making their way to the summit. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to bring Santiago's remains to the base camp, Bhandari informed.
This is the season's first death of foreign climbers on Mt. Everest, the local tourism department noted. Earlier, two Sherpa support staff, who were taken ill at the Everest base camp, passed on at HAMS Hospital after they were brought for treatment, The Himalayan Times also reported.

According to Manila Bulletin's article, Camp IV is situated on the “Death Zone” of Mt. Everest, where oxygen level is extremely dangerous at 26,000 feet above sea level.
The late Pinoy climber was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar-Snowy Everest Expedition 2025.
