Transgender na UP Cebu alumna at dating student leader, patay sa enkwentro sa militar sa Negros

A former student leader from the University of the Philippines Cebu, identified as Jhon Isidor “Dee” Supelanas, a trans woman activist, was among seven individuals who died in Negros Occidental during what the military reported as an armed encounter with suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

The incident occurred in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division identified Supelanas, a communications graduate of UP Cebu, as a political instructor for the NPA’s southwest front operating in the 6th District of Negros Occidental.

The military also stated that within the underground movement, she was known by the alias “Dalia.”

The other fatalities were identified as Reniel Locsin Cellon, Mary Jane Maguilat, Charity Amacan, Jhonrey Mejares, Glenda Tinio Mejares, and an individual known only as Pitong.

Following clearing operations, their remains were transported to a mortuary in Barangay Hilamunan, Kabankalan.

Supelanas was remembered by fellow activists and former colleagues as a dedicated student leader who passionately advocated for academic freedom and the rights of the youth.

Brigadier General Michael Samson, the commander of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, stated that the deaths of Supelanas and the other six individuals represent a significant setback for the rebel group.

He asserted the military’s resolve to “relentlessly pursue and neutralize all armed rebels” while also offering an opportunity for surrender.

Military officials indicated that the group was part of the NPA’s Komiting Rehiyonal Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR-NCBS), which operates in the 6th District of Negros Occidental, encompassing areas such as Cauayan, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Candoni, Kabankalan, Sipalay, and parts of Negros Oriental.

Brigadier General Joey Escanillas, commander of the Army’s 302nd Infantry Brigade, suggested that the group was potentially involved in the NPA’s extortion activities, demanding payments from candidates campaigning in areas influenced by the rebels, especially with the upcoming May 12 special elections in Kabankalan.

Still in other news, an online seller identified as “Jude” was physically attacked by a buyer after delivering a hoodie jacket in Barangay Tabuc Subâ, Iloilo City. Footage shows the victim being chased and punched repeatedly by the suspect, “Yohanes,” who then fled the scene with the item, as per GMA News. Police say the suspect was not home during their visit, and his family claimed he was at work. The victim sustained injuries and plans to file charges for slight physical injuries and theft after the buyer failed to pay for the item.
