A sudden and intense downpour led to a significant accumulation of rainwater on the tent's roof, adding substantial weight that ultimately caused the structure to buckle and collapse.
“Yun pong heavy downpour talaga. Nabantayan din po kasi ng mga students na parang babagsak siya yung lang po may dalawang monoblock chairs na-damage po,” Principal Buyo explained, noting that observant students noticed the impending collapse, allowing for a swift reaction.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as students were immediately evacuated from the area before the tent gave way.
The principal confirmed that only two monoblock chairs sustained damage in the incident.
The tent, a temporary structure intended to serve as an extension of the school gymnasium, was provided by the local government unit (LGU) in response to the school's request.
With approximately 886 graduating students expected to attend the ceremony, the additional space was crucial, especially considering that the municipal gymnasium is currently undergoing repairs and is unavailable for use.

“For now, hindi pa po kasi natin magamit ang municipal gym under repair po so we have to make our school gym ma-accommodate ang ating mga graduates po and mga parents we have around 886 graduates,” Buyo stated, highlighting the necessity of the temporary structure.
In the aftermath of the collapse, the LGU promptly took action to rectify the situation.
Principal Buyo reported that the tent had already been repaired by the following day, Saturday, April 12, 2025, in anticipation of the actual graduation ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
“Na-fix na po ng LGU yon kahapon pa po maám. Ang sa pagkakaalam ko maám parang stronger materials na po ang ginamit po nila maám and of course we are praying hindi uulan maam,” she said, expressing hope for favorable weather conditions on the graduation day.
The principal indicated that stronger materials were reportedly used in the repair, suggesting a proactive measure to prevent a similar incident.
Following the event, the Department of Education-Davao (DepEd-11) issued a reminder to all schools in the region, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and the readiness of their disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) plans.
DepEd-11 Spokesperson Jenelito Atillo stressed the need for schools to have established DRRM efforts in place.
“Ready talaga dapat ang disaster risk reduction and management effort sa kada eskwelahan dahil may na-establish ng DRRM effort and secondly kung may makikitang mga…even minor issues pertaining to facilities especially sa mga gagamitin sa end of school year rites immediately ipaalam sa school authorities upang maaksyunan kaagad,” Atillo advised, urging schools to promptly report any facility concerns, especially those related to end-of-school-year activities, to school authorities for immediate action.
This reminder underscores the importance of proactive safety measures in educational institutions, particularly in regions prone to inclement weather.
