Cardiologist Willie Ong announced on Thursday that he is withdrawing from the 2025 Senate race to prioritize his health.

"I am officially withdrawing my candidacy for the 2025 elections. So I can focus more on taking care of my health," Ong stated in a Facebook post.

Although stepping away from the senatorial race, Ong reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for good governance and supporting candidates who share his vision.

“I will continue to support good governance and the candidates who espouse the same ideals as mine. Our advocacy to help the poor Filipinos continues even in my private capacity," he said.

He also expressed gratitude to his supporters for their prayers and encouragement.

Ong previously revealed in September last year that he was undergoing treatment for cancer. Doctors discovered a 16 x 13 x 12 cm sarcoma in his abdomen, located behind his heart and in front of his spine.

That same month, he declared his intention to run for senator in the May 2025 elections. His wife, Dr. Liza Ong, submitted his certificate of candidacy on his behalf, as he was undergoing medical treatment in Singapore at the time.

The campaign period for senatorial candidates and party-list groups began on Tuesday and will continue until May 10, 2025. Meanwhile, candidates for the House of Representatives, as well as provincial, city, and municipal positions, can campaign from March 28 to May 10.

In other news, a tricycle driver ends up in jail after attempting to bump a policeman at a Comelec checkpoint. The incident happened in San Marcelino, Zambales, where police authorities were conducting a routine Comelec checkpoint. According to Police Regional Office III Regional Director Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, the tricycle driver acted suspiciously upon approaching said checkpoint. This prompted several police personnel to pursue the tricycle but instead of complying, it maneuvered recklessly, injuring a policeman in the process.

Still in other news, a family of three almost met a tragic end when the motorcycle they’re riding in fell down when a dog crossed its path. GMA Regional News shared a CCTV footage from an establishment nearby captured the incident. In the footage, one can see the motorcycle carrying the rider, a woman and a child traversing the designated motorcycle lane. All of a sudden, a dog crossed their path, sending all three of them tumbling down with one narrowly missed by the tires of a passing SUV.
