Barangay Captain Myla Muyargas, who was nearby, described the harrowing scene.
She noted that the family, consisting of a couple with their child, met the accident when a dog suddenly crossed their path, causing them to fall with one of them narrowly avoiding being struck by the oncoming SUV.
“Mag-asawa at may bata eh. Yung isa, muntik pang naano yung ulo niya dun sa SUV na kasunod niya. Buti na lang walang nangyari, gasgas lang,” Myla Muyargas, the Chairperson of Barangay Malabago, said.
Fortunately, despite the dramatic nature of the accident, the family escaped with only minor scrapes and bruises.
Following the incident, the family involved declined to file a formal complaint with the local barangay or report the incident to the police.
While they were fortunate to avoid serious injury, this near-miss highlights the ongoing danger posed by stray animals on roadways.
Local authorities are appealing to pet owners to be responsible and keep their animals properly contained to prevent such accidents from occurring.
This incident in Mangaldan follows a recent, tragic accident in Olongapo City where a motorcycle rider was killed after a similar collision with a dog caused them to fall into the path of a truck.
These accidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of animal control and responsible pet ownership to ensure public safety.
“Itong mga national highways natin at provincial roads na dapat po sana walang mga hayop diyan na tumatawid,” P/LtCol Roldan Cabatan, Chief of the Mangaldan Police Station, said.
