Dr. Jose Rizal’s letters, which he wrote before his execution at Bagumbayan, continue to surface in various places.
Recently, a handwritten letter of the Philippine hero was accidentally discovered in the archives of the Vienna City Library.
The said letter was presented to the public last Friday, January 24, in a lecture by Dr. Johann Stockinger, an Austrian cultural anthropologist and the vice president ng Austro-Philippine Society.
According to Dr. Stockringer, he found the letter last September 2023 while examining some letters written to a newspaperman named Johannes Nordmann.

“The first letter that appeared from the search results was from 'Jose Kisz'. When I looked at the first page, I didn't find anything special. And on the second page, suddenly the message was, ‘In my novel, Noli Me Tangere…’ When I got to the end of the letter, I realized it must be an original,” Dr. Stockringer said.
Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes Bernas thanked Dr. Stockringer for his extraordinary discovery.
“He found out more about his own history and countryman, ang Austrian writer and teacher na si Ferdinand] Blumentritt, from visiting the Philippines and seeing a sign that says, ‘Blumentritt Avenue\. From there, his body of research on Blumentritt and Rizal blossomed. I hope we can bring his writings in German to a greater audience by looking for a Filipino or an English translator to publish them,” Ambassador Bernas said.
News, photos or videos that arouse the interest of netizens would often go viral on social media, due to the attention netizens give them. These viral posts appeal to the emotions of netizens, and in rare cases, such could also happen to ordinary people, making them very relatable.
