A mother was sentenced to life imprisonment after she sold her 8-month-old baby to be able to pay her debt incurred from e-sabong.

According to a report of Balitambayan of GMA News, the regional trial court in Quezon City, sentenced the mother and three more for the crime in 2022.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) revealed that the Regional Trial Court Branch 86 of Quezon City sentenced them for qualified traff*cking in persons.

The mother, and three more, were made to pay a fine of P2 million each.

"[T]he judgment rendered by the Regional Trial Court Branch 86 in Quezon City against all accused is a living testament of the resolute effort of the NBI to eradicate human traff*cking in the country," said the NBI.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago said that the decision of the court must serve as a warning to those who intend to engage in human traff*cking.

In another viral news story, a woman from Carcar, Cebu, who died because of eclampsia a week after giving birth to her child, was allegedly taken advantage of after getting buried in the cemetery. According to a report by GMA News, a gravedigger reportedly noticed the coffin lying outside of its grave a day after getting buried. When they checked the woman inside, she was no longer wearing undergarments, and her upper dress was lifted up.
