Alice Guo, when she saw DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos in Indonesia today, September 5, was overheard asking for his help.

It can be recalled that Sec. Abalos, along with PNP Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil, boarded a chartered flight early morning of September 5 to meet with their Indonesian counterpart to negotiate for the turnover of the former Bamban mayor.

This was after news of Guo’s arrest in the satellite city of Tangerang in Jakarta spread far and wide online on September 4.

Immediately, top Philippine officials led by Sec. Abalos and PNP Chief Marbil flew to Indonesia to bring back Guo to the Philippines.

In a video shared by the Philippine Star, one can clearly hear Guo asking Sec. Abalos for his help.

“Hi Sec,” Guo said when she saw Sec. Abalos.
“Alice. Ikaw pala si Alice,” Sec. Abalos said.
“Nagkita po tayo before,” Guo said.
“Saan,” Sec. Abalos asked.
“Tarlac po Sec,” Guo replied.
“Nandun ka ba nung mayor ka nun?” Sec. Abalos again asked.
“Opo,” Guo replied.
“Nandun sila nun sila governor,” Sec. Abalos seem to recall.
“Opo opo,” Guo said.
“Ikaw talaga,” Sec. Abalos in a fatherly manner chided Guo a bit.

“Sec, patulong. May death threat po kasi ako,” Guo said very clearly, her audio captured by the recorder.
“Di bale. Basta ang importante...” Sec. Abalos said, which at this point, the audio became muted and then when audio was restored, the DILG Secretary was heard saying: “Yung totoo.”
“Opo, Sec Opo,” Guo assured him.
“Kaya nga kumuha na kami ng private plane dito para maano kasi,” Sec. Abalos continued, with the last portion of the clear audio show him saying: “Sa tingin ko para kayong Chinese.”

Alice Leal Guo is the Mayor of the Municipality of Bamban, Tarlac. She won as mayor during the national elections in 2022. She became known nationwide after her name was dragged into the ongoing Senate investigations regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations or (POGO) and the alleged proliferation of illegal immigrants. Her name has been the subject of many online memes since then.

Early in the afternoon today, Guo was officially turned over to the Philippine officials who went to Indonesia to negotiate her return to the Philippines. The officials were led by Interior Sec. Benhur Abalos and PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil. The video shared by ABS-CBN News showed Guo wearing a white striped shirt. Abalos mentioned that they and the Indonesian government have discussed the matter and a possible cooperation between the two countries.

After Guo was arrested in Indonesia September 4, reports of Indonesian authorities leaning towards a prisoner exchange spread online. According to news sources gathered by GMA, the Indonesian government would like to exchange Alice Guo for a Philippine prisoner who is also wanted in Indonesia. The report further stated that the case of the dismissed official is different from that of Cassandra Li-Ong and Sheila Guo, who were swiftly sent back to the Philippines after their arrest by Indonesian Immigration officers. GMA News also showed what appeared to be a screengrab of an Indonesian news site with headlines that suggest the Indonesian National Police is now negotiating with Philippine authorities on the possibility of a prisoner exchange.
