According to the ABS-CBN breaking report, De Lima’s lawyer, Atty Filibon Tacardon, has issued a statement regarding the decision of the Muntinlupa court.

The report did not say whether Atty Tacardon gave any other details apart from the news about De Lima’s acquittal.

In a GMA News report, it stated that the only message De Lima's lawyer sent to reporters is the word "acquitted."

Meanwhile, in a separate report by the Inquirer, it stated that the acquittal is the second victory of De Lima, which was handed down by the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 204.

De Lima has, in the past, occupied several positions in the government, namely as Senator, Department of Justice Secretary, and Human Rights Secretary.

She ran and won as Senator in the 2016 poll, the same general elections that saw former President Rodrigo Duterte get elected as President of the Philippines.

It was President Duterte who mentioned about the alleged drug links of then Sen. De Lima.

Less than a year after winning the elections, Sen. De Lima found herself arrested and detained on February 24, 2017 on drug-related charges.

Her recent acquittal, however, might not result in her immediate freedom from incarceration.

According to a report by Rappler, the former senator could remain in detention until the Muntinlupa City RTC Branch 256 is able to issue a resolution on De Lima's petition for bail.

Leila de Lima, a former senator of the Republic of the Philippines. She has been incarcerated since 2017. It was alleged that the senator used dr*g money for her campaign in 2016.

Several months ago, KAMI reported that the former senator was taken hostage by three prisoners at the Camp Crame jail. The three detainees who hostaged the former senator were allegedly initially trying to escape the detention center. They were identified as Feliciano Sulayao, Jr., Idang Susukan, and Arnel Cabintoy. According to the PNP, the three detainees stabbed a police officer, but one was able to fire at them, before Sulayao headed towards the cell of the former senator.

Previously, she took to social media to express her gratitude to Sen. Manny Pacquiao for joining in the call to release her from detention. The lady senator has been in detention for more than five years after being accused of involvement in illegal substances. Sen. Leila has vehemently denied the charges, which she attributed to the alleged vindictiveness of some political personalities. She said that the cases filed against her were all fabricated.
