Walden Bello, inaresto dahil sa cyber libel; warrant laban sa dating VP candidate, inisyu ng Davao City RTC

Walden Bello, the chairperson of the Laban ng Masa and a former vice presidential candidate, was arrested by authorities after the court ordered his arrest for cyber libel.

According to Rappler, the arrest warrant, which stemmed from the cyber libel complaint filed by a certain Jefry Tupas, was issued on August 8 by the Davao City Regional Trial Court.

Tupas is said to be the former information officer of then Davao City Mayor, now VP Sara Duterte.

A report by CNN revealed that Tupas claimed in her complaint that Bello called her on social media a substance user and dealer.

The former information officer is seeking 10 million pesos in damages.

A PhilStar report said that Bello faces two charges and his legal team said they plan to post a bail of P48,000 for each count.

During the May 2022 elections, Bello ran as VP alongside his running mate, presidential candidate Leody de Guzman. Both lost in the elections.

Walden Bello is a Filipino social activist, academic and environmentalist who became a party-list representative to the Philippine House of Representatives. He is also the founder and chairman of the organization, Laban ng Masa. He ran for vice-president alongside presidential candidate Leody de Guzman but lost in the elections.

During the campaign season, Bello and his running mate, de Guzman, went viral when they shared a video of them having a light moment with Kakampinks. In a video posted by Laban ng Masa on FB, the Leody-Walden tandem received cheers from the supporters of the Leni Robredo-Kiko Pangilinan tandem when they passed by the Kakampinks joining a campaign rally. Ka Leody and Walden likewise posed for pictures with the said Kakampinks. The video then became viral and received positive comments from its viewers.

A few days after the election in May, Bello's running mate, de Guzman, took to Twitter and expressed how the masses are going through tough times. He said that the masses are already suffering, which is why it is time to tax the billionaires. The labor leader then said that it is time to retrieve the stolen wealth. He then added that the "pekeng Tallano gold" could not pay for our rising debt.
