Maki explained that the pain of betrayal was particularly difficult because his former partner was also his closest friend.

"Feeling ko, mas nalabas ko talaga 'yong sa songwriting ko muna 'yong sa sakit. Kasi 'yon ang pinaka-extreme na naramdaman ko sa buhay ko, ever. 'Yong pain ng betrayal," he said.

During their conversation, host Vice Ganda pointed out that writing happy love songs could sometimes be more challenging than creating sad ones. He suggested that heartbreak songs often allow artists to express their emotions more easily.

Maki, however, shared his perspective on why sad songs resonate with listeners.

"Pero feeling ko kasi, mas na-i-explain doon 'yong love," Maki added.

Vice then reflected on how sadness can be connected to the experience of loving someone deeply.

"Kasi love comes with pain, di ba? Kapag sad song kasi madalas ang ano, tapos nakaka-relate 'yong mga tao, ibig sabihin, nagmahal ka talaga."

The discussion eventually returned to Maki's earlier mention of betrayal, prompting him to share more details about his previous relationship.

According to the singer, their connection initially began as a friendship before developing into a romantic relationship. However, things eventually fell apart, and his former partner ended up with someone he had previously felt jealous of.

"Mahirap kasi 'pag 'yong jowa mo, best friend mo rin. Tapos lahat binigay mo," he said.

Maki admitted that the situation made him realize that his suspicions had not been unfounded. He recalled how his former partner went to the person he had been worried about after their relationship ended.

"So, ibig sabihin, totoo. Nagseselos ako. kasi ano, di ba? So, no'ng wala na kami, pumunta siya doon sa pinagseselosan ko. So, tama nga 'yon, tama nga ako. Ibig sabihin, hindi totoo lahat," he remarked.

Vice sought clarification about what Maki meant, asking whether he felt that his former partner's feelings and displays of affection had never been genuine.

"Ibig sabihin, hindi totoo 'yong mga naramdaman at ipinakita niya sa 'yo?" Vice asked.

Maki agreed, explaining that he could not consider such actions genuine love.

"Oo. Para sa akin, gano'n siya. Kasi hindi mo gagawin 'yon sa taong mahal mo, eh. So, ibig sabihin, hindi 'yan totoong pagmamahal."

Beyond the relationship's painful ending, Maki also acknowledged how difficult it was to recover emotionally. The experience happened when he was already going through one of the lowest periods of his life, making the heartbreak even harder to process.

Rather than immediately finding ways to forget what happened, he eventually learned to acknowledge his feelings. He allowed himself to experience the sadness and gradually worked through the emotions by incorporating them into his songs.

However, there was another difficulty surrounding the experience. Maki revealed that his former partner had specifically told him not to share the story with anyone, leaving him without an outlet to express what he had been going through.

"Saka ako ang magfi-feel ng bago na emotion. So, you know, kung nilagay ko sa songs, nilagay ko sa mga ano. Kasi may ano 'yan e, 'yong ex ko kasi, may ano siya sa akin, 'Bawal mo sabihin kahit kanino.' So, wala rin akong outlet...Siya 'yong gumagawa ng narrative," he said.

Despite the painful experiences behind some of his songs, Maki has continued to establish himself as one of the notable hitmakers in the OPM scene.

Maki (born Ralph William Datoon) is a fast-rising Filipino singer and songwriter who first captured widespread attention with his viral breakout hits "Saan?" and "Bakit?" He cemented his mainstream success with his chart-topping, record-breaking single "Dilaw," which made history on both the global Spotify and Billboard charts.
