Apl shared the story during his appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Wednesday, October 7, while discussing several Filipino-American artists he has crossed paths with in the United States.
Among the names brought up during the conversation was Scherzinger, the former Pussycat Dolls member. Apl explained that Nicole was particularly close to his Black Eyed Peas bandmate will.i.am, especially because the two had worked together as coaches on The Voice in London.
Despite their friendship, Apl recalled making a move on Nicole by inviting her over for a Filipino meal.

“One day, I hit up on her, I'm like, 'Hey, Nicole, you wanna come over? I'm gonna cook you chicken adobo.' She's like, 'Kuya, you're my kuya!' I was like, 'Aww!' You know, when they call you 'kuya,' it's over,” Apl said.
The singer's recollection suggested that being regarded as an older-brother figure quickly changed the direction of his attempt to pursue Nicole.
Apl also mentioned another prominent artist who treats him similarly. He said H.E.R., whom he described as the voice actress of Forgotten Island, also calls him “kuya” whenever they meet.
“Oh, yeah. Everytime I see H.E.R., she's like, 'Kuya!' you know, 'We gotta do a song together, another 'Bebot,' you know?'” Apl shared.
Beyond his experiences with Nicole and H.E.R., Apl also spoke about his friendship with Bruno Mars. He recalled spending time with the Filipino-American superstar during a European tour and remembering a conversation they had after Bruno returned from the Philippines.
“And [Bruno] just came back from the Philippines and was like, 'Man, if another interviewer asks me about you!' I'm like, 'They're just proud.'”
Despite their busy careers, Apl said he hopes to collaborate with Bruno someday.
“I really wanna do a song with Bruno, so one day.”
The discussion also touched on Apl's latest musical project, a three-track EP titled “PPP.” According to the singer, the title stands for “Power of the Pilipino People.”
Apl described the project as his love letter to the Philippines, particularly at a time when the country is facing several challenges.
“The love letter is about hope, love, and peace, which is the core value of the Filipinos. And I want to inspire through music, to encourage, to empower, and you know, right now, the Philippines is going through a lot of challenges with the flooding issue, the calamities, and our economy. I wanted to inspire,” said Apl.
GMA Music is partnering with Apl for the release of the new project, which centers on his desire to use music to inspire and uplift Filipinos.
