Rene, a former Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball player, died on June 8, 2026, after drowning during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. The jersey that Rovelyn brought to Boss Toyo was one Rene had worn during his senior high school years.
The issue was discussed during the latest episode of “PP Stars Inc.” on Monday, October 5, after reports circulated online claiming that Boss Toyo had planned to purchase Rene’s jersey for ₱25 million.
Rovelyn firmly denied that she intended to sell the sentimental item to Boss Toyo, regardless of the amount offered.

“May nagtanong po sa akin na ganyan. ‘Totoo bang bibilhin ni Boss Toyo ‘yong jersey ng anak mo?’ Sabi ko, hindi ko ’yon ibebenta sa kaniya kahit ilang milyon."
The rumored ₱25-million valuation had previously become part of the online discussions surrounding Rene’s jersey. Boss Toyo, however, said he had remained quiet about the matter at the time.
“Ako, tahimik lang ako no’n, e,” Boss Toyo said.
He also rejected the idea that he had used the controversy to gain attention or promote himself.
“Never akong sumakay do’n sa clout. Never akong gumawa ng kahit anong gimmick noong time na ‘yon. Kasi alam ko, noong mga panahon na ‘yon, hindi ‘yon para sakyan mo [‘yong isyu], e,”
Boss Toyo further clarified that Rovelyn did not visit his shop to sell Rene’s jersey.
Rovelyn likewise explained that the decision to give the jersey to Boss Toyo was entirely voluntary and did not involve any payment or exchange.
“Bigay ko po ito sa kaniya [kay Boss Toyo] nang kusa na walang kapalit po para alagaan niya nang mabuti po.”
The gesture gave the jersey a different meaning beyond the earlier speculation about its supposed monetary value. Instead of being treated as an item for sale, it was entrusted to Boss Toyo to be properly cared for.
Toward the end of the discussion, Boss Toyo and his wife, Loves Jhoy, expressed their admiration for Rene, particularly for what they described as his qualities as an exemplary son.
Boss Toyo, whose real name is Jayson Jay Luzadas, is a popular Filipino digital content creator, entrepreneur, and vlogger who rose to massive fame as the creator and host of the hit online memorabilia show Pinoy Pawnstars.
In a related previous report concerning Kara David’s investigative work, the veteran journalist defended her I-Witness documentary about an alleged illegal dumpsite in Subic after Boss Toyo’s post prompted questions about its credibility. Kara explained that her team spent more than a month looking into the issue and spoke with members of the Ayta community, representatives from the DENR and NCIP, and the local government.
