The issue was raised during the latest episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Friday, October 2, after host Boy Abunda brought up the criticism she had received since Rene became a public figure.

She also clarified that the memorabilia associated with Rene were not something she began selling only after his death. According to Rovelyn, the idea of selling items connected to her son had already been discussed while he was still alive.

"No'ng buhay pa po 'yong anak ko, 'yon na po 'yong iniwan niya sa akin na negosyo. Siya 'yong nakaisip na magbenta kami ng mga memorable niya kasi marami daw nanghihingi sa kaniya," Rovelyn explained.

She recalled how they initially started the venture without capital, relying on social media posts to find customers interested in the items.

"Kaya ayon, nag-umpisa kami, nag-post muna ako kasi wala kaming puhunan. Nag-post ako sino gusto mag-order ng Baterbonia Collection po," she added.

Rovelyn had previously addressed similar accusations through a Facebook post. She pointed out that she and Rene were already selling jerseys while he was still alive and that the activity was intended to help with their family's expenses.

She also maintained that she did not ask people for financial assistance, saying that those who wanted to help did so voluntarily.

“At may pera man po kami di po ako nanghingi at kusa naman po nagbigay ang mga tumulong sa amin,” she said.

Rovelyn Baterbonia is best known as the mother of the late collegiate basketball player Rene Clert "Bobet" Baterbonia Jr. Following her son's tragic death during a team-building activity, she became a prominent public voice demanding a thorough investigation and accountability regarding safety protocols in sports programs.

In another report, Rovelyn Baterbonia clarified the ₱30 fee being collected at their physical establishment. She explained that the charge is specifically for visitors who want to enter the mini museum and does not apply to customers shopping at the store. Residents of Talacogon’s 16 barangays may enter the museum for free as long as they present proof of residency. Rovelyn issued the clarification after a viral video about the fee drew mixed reactions from netizens.

Meanwhile, Senator Robin Padilla and BB Gandanghari confirmed that the planned biopic about late basketball star Rene Baterbonia will proceed. Robin disclosed that the project is dealing with financial difficulties and what he described as industry politics that have created challenges for the production. Despite the backlash surrounding the project, BB has been tapped to direct the film about Rene’s life and is now looking for actors who can portray the athlete’s parents. The team continues to work on the biopic despite the difficulties surrounding its production.
