Veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez raised questions about the deeper causes of flooding after seeing tons of garbage left in waterways in Parañaque City following heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon.

In a social media post, Sanchez called attention to the massive amount of waste that had accumulated in the waterways, particularly in the area in front of Baclaran Church. The garbage was seen after flooding affected several areas amid the continued rains.

“Para mejo sosyal naman. Did you know basura in Spanish is also basura?” Sanchez wrote.

She also shared her observation regarding the movement of garbage from Manila Bay and suggested that changes in the area may have affected where the waste ends up.

“All this garbage from the Manila Bay used to get washed up onto Manila waterways. Now with the reclamation it seems, the garbage now has diverted to Parañaque waters.”

The situation prompted Sanchez to raise a broader question about accountability for the country's recurring flooding problems. Rather than placing the blame solely on residents, she asked whether government agencies also bear responsibility for flood management and waste management.

“Wow. So tell me: mas kasalanan ba ng tao ang flooding problem natin? O ng gobyerno? I have an answer. You first," she said.

Her remarks sparked a range of reactions from netizens, with some arguing that both citizens and government officials have responsibilities in addressing flooding.

One commenter said the issue should not simply be framed as a conflict between the public and government, emphasizing that those with greater authority and resources should also face greater accountability.

Others pointed to improper waste disposal, inadequate garbage collection, the need for household discipline, and the responsibility of local government units to maintain drainage systems and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro emphasized that government efforts could still fall short if people continue to disregard proper waste disposal and other responsibilities.

The discussion ultimately underscored that flooding is a complex issue involving waste management, public behavior, infrastructure, and government responsibility.
