James first became one of the country's biggest television stars after his success with Nadine Lustre in the hit love team known as JaDine. Following the success of Diary ng Panget, the duo headlined several films before dominating primetime through ABS-CBN dramas On the Wings of Love and Till I Met You.
However, after Till I Met You concluded in early 2017, James quietly stepped away from teleseryes. Instead of pursuing more television projects, he focused on building his music career through Careless Music, the independent label he founded.
During the years that followed, James continuously released music, including the singles "Blessed," "Traffic," and "Richest Man Alive." His latest releases reflected a more personal style centered on finding happiness in life's simple moments rather than chasing fame.

Despite remaining active in music, many viewers did not expect him to return to television.
ABS-CBN eventually confirmed in 2025 that James would reunite with Dreamscape, this time opposite Kathryn Bernardo. The project also marks Kathryn's first drama series without Daniel Padilla as her leading man since she became a major television star.
The casting surprised many because James and Kathryn previously belonged to two of the biggest rival love teams of their generation. Although they briefly appeared together in ABS-CBN's 2015 Christmas station ID, this will be their first full-fledged acting project together.

Kathryn portrays Billy, the CEO of a dating application called Love List. While helping others find love, Billy unknowingly develops a close relationship with someone seeking revenge, placing both her business and personal life at risk.
James plays Jordan, Billy's childhood best friend and dependable companion during the challenges she faces. His role also connects to his real-life passion for music, as his song "Traffic" forms part of the series soundtrack while he is also writing one of the show's original songs.
The production is directed by Chad V. Vidanes and Dolly Dulu, with supporting performances from Maja Salvador, Dimples Romana, Rowell Santiago, Rita Avila, Matt Evans, Gela Atayde, McCoy De Leon, Daniela Stranner, Migs Casimiro, and several other seasoned actors.
Both lead stars have openly acknowledged the challenges of returning to television.
