Kapamilya actor Coco Martin opened up about his painful childhood experiences during an emotional conversation in the podcast “Unshaken with Gary V: Stories of Grit and Grace,” hosted by Gary Valenciano.

In the interview, Coco Martin recalled growing up in a broken family marked by violence, fear, and emotional struggle. He shared how his father’s alcohol use often led to aggression at home, leaving him and his siblings in constant anxiety during their early years.

“Broken family kami. Bata ako every night wala akong matandaan na maayos na tulog, parang gabi-gabi kinakabahan kami. Tatlo kaming magkakapatid kasi 'yung father ko dati kapag nalalasing talaga sinasaktan niya 'yung nanay ko every night 'yon, kapag nakainom siya. Pero kapag hindi siya nakainom ang tatay ko naman sobrang bait, sobrang mahiyain. Kapag nakainom, nagi-split 'yung personality, siya na siga sa buong lugar namin," Martin recalled.

He also revealed that his childhood trauma affected his ability to speak confidently in school. According to him, it was only through the help of a supportive teacher in high school that he was able to slowly express himself and regain confidence.

"Noong kinuwento ko humagulgol ako, tapos hiyang-hiya ako sa buong klase naming siyempre nga lalaki ako, tapos umiiyak ako sa harapan ng teacher ko. Tapos noong na-release ko 'yon parang gumaan nagkaroon na ako ng ano na makapagsalita, nakakapag-recite na ako. Pero sabi ko siguro 'yon 'yung trauma doon sa pamilya na pinagdaanan ko," Martin said.

Despite everything he went through, Martin said these experiences shaped his determination to change his life. He shared that he made a promise to himself to never pass on the same hardships to his future family.

He also expressed how he has become more open in showing affection to others, something he could not do when he was younger due to fear and lack of confidence.

Martin further emphasized that despite the separation of his parents, he never held resentment toward his father. Instead, he focused on understanding the situation and prioritizing his family’s well-being, especially his siblings.

As the eldest, he felt a strong responsibility to succeed and avoid destructive paths, choosing instead to finish college and work toward stability in life. Today, he continues to strive for a better future, not only for himself but also for his siblings, whom he continues to support through his career and work in the entertainment industry.

After breaking through in acclaimed independent films, he achieved massive mainstream success by helming and starring in legendary, long-running action television series like FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, FPJ's Batang Quiapo, and Sigabo.

In another report, Coco Martin reaffirmed that he has no intention of entering politics despite receiving multiple invitations over the years. The actor explained that he prefers to help people through personal and direct means rather than taking on a government role. He also revealed that he previously turned down a gambl*ng endorsement deal, even after being offered a higher amount.

Meanwhile, Coco Martin recently renewed his contract as brand ambassador of Republic Gas Corporation (Regasco), with Julia Montes joining him this year. The two appeared more comfortable as they shared insights about their lives and relationship during media interactions. Coco praised Julia’s cooking skills, saying she studied under four chefs and even calling her the “queen of the kitchen” and the heart of their home, as she manages both their household and CCM Productions.
