Joy, who holds the title of Miss Philippines Earth 2025, faced intense social media scrutiny from netizens after reports circulated regarding the substantial financial allocation set aside for the local government-backed festivities.
Public dissatisfaction surfaced online as critics pointed out that the local administration reportedly allocated a massive P75 million budget for the week-long Kaogma Festival, scheduled to take place on May 28.

Taking directly to her personal social media platform, Joy addressed the public backlash head-on.
She explained that multiple individuals were calling her out and demanding that artists who claim to be dedicated to environmental and social advocacies should turn down employment opportunities associated with heavily funded local government events.
“A lot of people are calling me out because I accepted a hosting gig in a province that allegedly allotted P75M for their festival. There were demands that if we’re (artists) really true to our advocacies, then we shouldn’t have accepted it,” Joy stated on her official account on X (formerly Twitter).
In response to the accusations, the beauty queen clarified her professional boundaries, stating that her presence at the Kaogma Festival pageant is strictly professional and independent of local political agendas.
The festival takes place within the prominent jurisdiction of Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr. Joy strongly dissociated her work from political promotion, asserting, “Naroon po ako para mag-host ng pageant, hindi para mag-endorso ng pulitiko.”
Furthermore, Joy explicitly criticized the growing online trend of dismissing an advocate's lifelong public service over a single career choice, categorizing the backlash as a form of ideological extremism that limits practical civic engagement.
“Napaka-dangerous ng culture of moral absolutism where one decision suddenly invalidates years of advocacy and work. Hindi po yan call for accountability. That’s purity politics. So let us not collapse everything into a moral purity test where any association is treated as total ideological alignment,” Joy explained, urging the public to stop adopting a rigid mindset.
The broadcast communication graduate and former government communications public relations officer noted that real-world change requires staying active in mainstream spaces rather than isolating oneself.
Joy expressed that remaining present allows progressive voices to continuously reach broader audiences and subtly influence the status quo from within.
“Also wala pong taong kayang maging purist at absolutist sa moral high ground all the time. People can criticize systems while still existing and working within them every single day. That’s literally how society functions. (e.g. mga union sa kumpanya),” Joy concluded.
Joy Barcoma, an advocate for disaster risk reduction from Bacoor, Cavite, secured the Miss Philippines Earth title in 2025. She later represented her country on the global stage, concluding her journey as a runner-up in the international Miss Earth pageant.
Recently, the beauty queen also publicly opposed the frequent utilization of superficial branding mechanisms on digital platforms. The titleholder explained that assigning restrictive tags to individuals often stymies personal evolution and individual exploration. She acknowledged holding a comparable outlook in the past prior to undergoing a significant shift in her values. The advocate championed the cultivation of empathy consciousness and mutual assistance over public condemnation.
She also openly advocated for Miss Universe-Philippines Bea Millan-Windorski following public skepticism directed at her cultural background and heritage. The pageant winner highlighted Bea's consistent participation and visible leadership in domestic socio-civic initiatives. Bea confronted the digital backlash directly including negative commentary concentrated on her superficial attributes. She disclosed how guidance from Miss Universe 2025 Fatima provided her with the fortitude to endure public scrutiny.
