The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has ordered the immediate impounding of a taxi and the filing of criminal charges against its driver and operator after a viral complaint involving a K-Pop star in Cebu. The directive came from LTFRB chair Vigor D. Mendoza II, who said stricter enforcement is needed to curb repeated overcharging incidents.

The controversy began when Soobin of Tomorrow X Together uploaded a video showing the disputed fare during a vacation in Cebu. The footage indicated that the initial price was P350, but the passenger was asked to pay P500, with the driver later insisting on P1,000, claiming the taxi used special fuel. The clip quickly gained millions of views online and revived past reports of foreign performers experiencing similar issues.

“Enough is enough. Despite the concern and understanding of the government, they still engage in this shameful act that put the country in bad light,” said Mendoza.

He emphasized that the LTFRB would treat the case as a test for a tougher policy targeting erring drivers.

“I have already instructed the Regional Director, LTFRB Region 7, to identify the driver and operator and locate the taxi unit for immediate impounding. We will file criminal charges for violating public service law and estafa,” said Mendoza.

He added that administrative penalties, including franchise revocation and license cancellation, are also being pursued.

“The taxi unit will also be impounded pending trial,” he added.

The LTFRB said the move aligns with directives from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and transport authorities to protect commuters. Mendoza noted that once implemented, the new policy will make impounding and criminal charges a standard response to overcharging complaints.
