The singer's post-movie reflections, which focused heavily on mental health and resilience, were perceived by some netizens as missing the film's core message about reproductive health, safe s3x, and abortion as a healthcare issue in the Philippines.
In an Instagram Story, the leader of the popular P-pop group addressed the online discourse directly, stating, "If my choice of words and how I posted Sunshine's experience came across differently than I intended, I sincerely apologize po."
She revealed that she was initially unaware of the criticism, having been inactive on X (formerly Twitter), and was only informed about the trending topic by a friend.
This prompted her to issue a comprehensive follow-up statement to provide clarity on her intentions.
Jhoanna explained that her primary takeaway from the film was the importance of strong support systems and education, and the heavy weight of societal pressure.
"What I hoped to emphasize was the weight of societal pressure, how crucial support systems are, and how access to proper education can empower people to make informed, safe decisions for themselves, whatever those decisions may be," she wrote.
She acknowledged that her initial review, while thoughtful, may not have fully captured the sensitive and urgent nature of the film's central themes.
The initial post had included encouraging words for "young moms" while also cautioning others not to "exchange our future for temporary happiness," which was the specific phrasing that drew fire from critics who felt it was a misinterpretation of the film's pro-choice advocacy.
The film's director, Antoinette Jadaone, also weighed in on the matter, offering a defense of Jhoanna's perspective.
In a separate social media post, Jadaone speculated that as a public figure, Jhoanna and the other members of BINI might be careful about openly discussing polarizing issues like abortion.
She emphasized that a film’s meaning can be subjective, and Jhoanna’s emotional reaction, particularly her focus on mental health, was a valid and personal interpretation.
"The author is dead," Jadaone wrote, "so if you've watched it, it's yours, the sunshine is Jho's."
The incident highlights a broader conversation about how art is consumed and interpreted, particularly when it addresses sensitive and timely social issues.

While some netizens were quick to point out what they saw as a misstep in her commentary, many of Jhoanna's fans, known as 'Blooms', rushed to her defense.
They argued that she is entitled to her own opinion and that the purpose of the film, as Maris Racal herself has stated, is to "start a conversation" rather than to dictate a single point of view.
The online debate, while initially contentious, ultimately fulfilled the film's goal by bringing these important topics to the forefront of public discussion.
