In an interview with ABS-CBN, which aired on TV Patrol on February 3, Villanueva expressed sadness over the news.
“It is a sad time, dahil maraming naka-relate kay Shan Cai, maraming nag-hope like Shan Cai, at maraming na-in love like Shan Cai. Ang daming kinilig, ang daming naisabuhay ni Shan Cai 'yung mga buhay nila.”
“So, nakakalungkot dahil wala na si Barbie, but Shan Cai will live in our hearts,” said Villanueva, who is now based in London.
Villanueva, who didn't get the chance to meet the actress during her visit to the Philippines in 2003, also aired, “Sayang nga eh, I wish I could have met her at that point. Especially the following year, umalis na ako ng Pilipinas.”
“But, as I said, kahit hindi kami nag-meet, feeling ko na-impersonate ko si Shan Cai,” she continued.
Villanueva further shared how much she felt honored to give to voice Barbie Hsu's well-loved character.
“It was such a great privilege to give her voice, para ma-inlove ang mga Pilipino sa kanya. So, it's a great opportunity.”
She also looked back on her unforgettable experience as Shan Cai’s voice actor.
“It was such an amazing feeling — kung kinikilig siya, kinikilig din ako. Kung nagmamahal siya, nagmamahal din ako. Masaya, it was such great fun.”
Meanwhile, Villanueva expressed her heartfelt message to the late Taiwanese actress’ family, friends, and fans.
“Nakikiramay ako sa mga pamilya, sa mga kaibigan ni Barbie, at sa lahat din ng mga fans ng Meteor Garden at ni Shan Cai,” Villanueva earnestly uttered.
