The actor told Bernadette that he initially hesitated to discuss his heroic acts captured on video during the height of typhoon Carina.
“Ang daming mas deserving. I think they are a lot of rescuers and volunteers na nandun din,” Gerald said during the interview.
“Siyempre ako nagkataon celebrity ako, so na-picturan, na-post. But it took me time to realize na ba’t hindi ko na lang ito gamitin to highlight 'yung ibang rescuers or volunteers, even 'yung mga nagdo-donate, to say also thank you to them,” he added.
After his heroic exploit reached the PCG hierarchy, the organization in August awarded him the “Search and Rescue Medal.
He was also recently promoted to auxiliary Captain of the PCG.
“I just want to use this as an inspiration, set an example para sa mga kapwang artista, even with normal people,” the actor said during his interview with Bernadette.
When asked as regards his inspiration why he joined the PCG, Gerald revealed it was his parents who inspired him.
He said his father, Gerald Anderson, Sr., was a US Navy officer while he saw his mom doing selfless acts while he was growing up, which contributed to his desire to do something good also.
“He was 30 years sa US Navy, retired navy siya. Pinanganak ako sa Subic Bay. ‘Dun siya naka-destino, ‘dun niya nakilala nanay ko,” Gerald shared about his father.
“I think nasa dugo namin din 'yung duty and service, call of duty, so I think 'yun naturally nakuha ko,” he added.
“Sa mom ko, may mga moments, days na gipit kami, pero 'pag may nanghihingi sa kanya, binibigay niya. ‘Yung parang she will go above and beyond para makatulong sa iba,” Gerald said.
Gerald Anderson is a Filipino-American actor born on March 7, 1989. He is best known for his lead roles in several TV series, including Sana Maulit Muli, My Girl, Tayong Dalawa, Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo, and Budoy.

In the now-viral video, Gerald was spotted jamming and dancing to 'budots' which had netizens laughing hard. Needless to say, the video went viral on Instagram and earned tons of laughing-crying emoji reacts from netizens.
