“Nah. No no no no no. No. No. There are folks who are far more deserving and whose National Artist awards are long overdue,” Lea answered.
The Broadway star then cited as an example, the late comedy king, Dolphy, whom she said has contributed much to the industry.
“I would love to see somebody like Dolphy, for example, it is because we have to judge him as an artist for his body of work and he has contributed so much,” the Broadway star said.
“Even the movies where he's cross dressing, it lends so much tolerance, and so much acceptance from the LGBT community, even if that was not his intention at the time, that was an effect, an after effect, that I dont think he could have foreseen,” she added.
Lea then said that Dolphy should be heralded first and expressed hopes she would be given the chance to champion the late comedy king.
“But that's just an example, of why I think he should be heralded first. So hopefully I would be given the opportunity to champion him,” Lea said.
Lea Salonga is an award-winning international singer and actress. She became known around the world when she got the role of 'Kim' in the musical Miss Saigon for which she won a Tony Award. She is also the first Asian woman to get this award. Lea is also known for being the singing voice of several Disney Princess characters, Jasmine and Mulan.
Recently, the Broadway star's wax figure was unveiled with Lea herself attending the unveiling event. The said figure is set to be displayed at Madame Tussauds Singapore. The Filipino pride's wax figure wears a blue gown designed by Pinoy fashion designer Rajo Laurel. Ciara Sotto, who was present during the unveiling, then posted a reel featuring the wax figure.
In another interview about a month ago, Lea and international star Dolly De Leon admitted they have experienced being shouted at and called names in the theater. According to the two, that experience somehow created an impact in who they are today. As for Lea, she said that when she worked at a theater in New York, she got a bit of culture shock as there was no shouting or name-calling there. Dolly said though that seeing young artists being shouted at and called names by big name directors or members of production crew somehow makes her cringe a bit.
