Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, in a recent interview over radio dwIZ, is asking for calm amid talks that the senate is planning to reduce the existing holidays in the Philippines.
Speaking over radio dwIZ on Saturday, August 11, Sen. Chiz clarified that the Senate under his leadership is not planning to reduce existing Philippine holidays but is looking to limit the addition of new ones.
In a Philippine Star report, he said senators are not insensitive to the public.
“All things can be angled in a negative way, but I hope they don’t think of us senators as insensitive people,” Sen. Chiz said in the interview.

In a Manila Bulletin report, it quoted Sen. Chiz as saying that the Senate just wanted to rationalize existing holidays.
“The Senate’s policy is not to reduce holidays – just not add to already several holidays and, instead, rationalize the existing holidays so that these would not be a burden to employers forced to give double pay during holidays,” he further said.
GMA News also quoted the Senate President as saying that the senate's aim is to improve the competitiveness of the country.
“Our only aim is to improve the country’s competitiveness,” the Senate President pointed out.
Sen. Chiz also said that the country has lagged behind its neighbors when it comes to key performances.
The Senate’s plan regarding holidays were not taken well by some netizens who asked legislators not to tinker with Philippine holidays.
Some netizens also called out senators for having too many recesses or breaks.
As it stand right now, the Senate enjoys legislative breaks of September 28 to November 3, December 21, 2024 to January 12, 2025, February 8, 2025 to June 1, 2025, and June 14, 2025 to July 27, 2025.
On X, several netizens aired their frustrations over the plan.
“Why not reduce the recess from session instead?” journalist Rommel Lopez posted on X.
“The Philippines has too many holidays? Well, our Congress and Senate have too many recesses. Don’t touch our f***ing holidays,” a netizen also said on X.
Francis Joseph "Chiz" Guevara Escudero is a politician and lawyer. He has been serving as a Senator since 2022. He is the husband of Heart Evangelista, who is a Filipina actress, singer, TV host, endorser, visual media artist, philanthropist, socialite, and also a former first lady of Sorsogon province. She was born on February 14, 1985, to a Chinese-Filipino father, restaurant mogul Reynaldo Evangelista Ongpauco, and Bicolana Maria Cecilia del Gallego Payawal.
Roughly a month ago, Sen. Chiz also gave his take on the letter sent him by suspended Bamban Mayor Alice Guo. In the said letter, the suspended local chief executive questioned why she’s being singled out by some senators in their investigations on POGO. The mayor also asked for understanding from the senate president and also requested help for her townmates in Bamban. During a recent interview, Sen. Chiz answered the points raised by Mayor Guo and also gave his own take on her requests.
He also previously gave a statement over the viral video where he was seen handing over his drink to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during the Vin d'Honneur at the Malacañang Palace. According to Sen. Chiz, he was just being a gentleman to the First Lady. It can also be seen in the video that the First Lady returned an almost empty glass to the Senate President after drinking some of its contents.
