Mitte joined the cast of "Breaking Bad" as a teenager in 2008, playing the son of Walter White, a chemistry teacher who becomes a drug kingpin. The character was central to the acclaimed series, which starred Bryan Cranston in the lead role.
According to Reilly, Mitte drew from his personal experience with cerebral palsy to bring greater authenticity to his performance. His work also helped him raise awareness about disability and encourage more inclusive representation in the entertainment industry.
"Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion," Reilly said.
Beyond acting, Mitte became involved in several advocacy and charitable initiatives. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, a nonprofit network of hospitals that provides specialized care for children.
Reilly also highlighted Mitte's philanthropic work through The Mitte Foundation, where he served as president. The organization supported charitable causes and community programs, while Mitte used his public profile to challenge misconceptions and advocate for better representation of people with disabilities.
"He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities," Reilly added.
"Breaking Bad" aired for five seasons from 2008 to 2013 and earned widespread recognition as one of television's most influential dramas. The New York Times recently ranked the series as the best television show of the 21st century.
Following the announcement of Mitte's death, his former co-stars shared emotional tributes and remembered the actor's time on the show.
Cranston recalled that Mitte was just 14 when production began and praised the young actor for his determination in handling the series' demanding filming schedule. He also reflected on watching Mitte develop his acting skills over time.
"That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor," Cranston wrote in an Instagram post.
Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, Walter White's young partner in the drug trade, also expressed his grief over the news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paul said he was "at a loss" following Mitte's passing.
"RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed," Paul said.
He also shared a message encouraging people to remember that they are cared for and do not have to face life's challenges alone.
"And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that."
Dean Norris, who portrayed Mitte's on-screen uncle, Drug Enforcement Administration agent Hank Schrader, likewise paid tribute to the actor. Norris recalled looking out for Mitte when he was a young performer on the set of "Breaking Bad."
"Though RJ didn't play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set," Norris wrote on social media.
Norris described Mitte as a kind young man and expressed disbelief over his death, while extending his thoughts to the actor's family.
"He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can't believe it. Thinking of him and his family."
