Mary Rivera, the Filipino-American actress remembered for playing Ned Leeds’ grandmother in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has passed away at the age of 82.

According to People, the actress died on April 15, 2026, in Honolulu. The news of her passing was reported months later after a family member spoke to TMZ.
Mary was born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines. Her family said she was “very proud” to portray the Filipino grandmother in the 2021 Marvel blockbuster.

She appeared alongside Jacob, Zendaya, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire in one of the film’s memorable sequences.
In the scene, Ned and MJ were trying to find their friend Peter Parker through a portal. Instead, they encountered other versions of Spider-Man played by Andrew and Tobey.
Mary’s Lola character added a distinctly Filipino touch to the sequence. She spoke in Tagalog and asked Andrew’s Spider-Man to clean up the cobwebs, with Ned translating her request.
Her family told TMZ that they were the ones who encouraged her to audition for the part. The role eventually gave Mary the opportunity to represent her Filipino roots in one of Marvel’s biggest films.
Jacob had also spoken warmly about working with her during a 2021 interview. He described her as “so sweet” and recalled that she had a great time during filming. He also credited director Jon Watts for allowing her to use Tagalog in the scene as a way of respecting Filipino culture. Vulture
Mary is survived by her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life was held in Hawaii in June.
