Television host and media personality Kim Atienza, known to many simply as Kuya Kim, recently addressed his stance on political discussions on the social media platform Threads, sparking reactions from netizens over his call for a more apolitical online space.

On Thursday, May 14, Kim took to Threads to share a message that emphasized his preference to avoid political discourse on the platform.

“I do not like politics. You may be pink, yellow or DDS, lets keep threads the way it was, apolitical.”

He followed this by reinforcing his appeal for mutual respect among users despite differing political beliefs, emphasizing inclusivity and civility in online interactions:

His statement quickly drew attention from users who interpreted his message in different ways. Among the responses that gained traction was a comment from a netizen who challenged Kim’s position, arguing that remaining “apolitical” could be interpreted as ignoring pressing societal issues. The commenter wrote:

“Ha? Apolitical in times like this? Respecting different views, sure. But calling out injustice isn’t ‘being political’ for a lot of people, it’s just being human. Staying quiet to keep things comfy isn’t exactly neutrality. That’s not being matanglawin, that’s choosing to look away.”
