Social media personality Xian Gaza took to his Facebook account on Thursday, March 19, to address Filipinos with relatives working as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. He highlighted the financial and emotional struggles that many workers are currently experiencing.

Xian began by urging families in the Philippines to be frugal, as many OFWs are facing unemployment and unpaid wages:

“Sa mga Pilipino sa Pinas na may breadwinner family member sa Dubai at UAE, magtipid-tipid na kayo. Kung may panahon ng ginhawa, ngayon ay panahon ng hinagpis. You need to adjust. Daang libo na ang jobless ngayon na Kabayan at walang sasahurin next month.”

He then emphasized that many OFWs may be hiding their hardships due to fear of legal consequences or restrictions on sharing negative news:

“Literal. Malaki yung posibilidad na isa na do'n yung kapamilya ninyo pero hindi lang makapagsabi sa inyo dahil takot silang makulong at bawal ang negative news maski sa chat. Sobrang hirap ng sitwasyon ngayon doon.”

Xian highlighted the impact of regional conflicts on the local economy, noting the closure of businesses and delayed salaries:

“Walang turismo gawa ng gyera. One by one ay nagsasarado na yung mga establishments all over the city, bawal lang ibalita. No work, no pay. Ultimo yung huling sahod nila for this month ay delayed na rin.”

He concluded with a direct appeal to families back home to stop overburdening their relatives and to recognize their sacrifices:

“Ano yung punto ko? Hirap na hirap ngayon yung kamag-anak niyo do'n. Tigilan niyo kakahingi ng pera na para bang may patago kayo. Gumawa kayo ng paraan diyan. Huwag niyo silang pigain. Umayos kayo. Ngayon niyo maa-appreciate lahat ng tulong at sakripisyo na ginawa nila para sa inyo matapos niyo silang abusuhin for how many years.”
